A day to be grateful

My first Thanksgiving Day…already this week. And my first month in US.

I am thankful that it is a day that prompts me to stop and think of being grateful - for my family, friends, faith and generally-blessed live.  Oh sure, I am grateful throughout the year, but to have a day set aside for it, is brilliant!

These days I have thought a lot about  how can I say thanks for the things someone has done for me… for all that I am, and ever hope to be. The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude.

Thanksgiving Day is a celebration of family and friends. And you know what-I am gonna have traditional Thanksgiving dinner with my new American family. Despite the fact I will think about my family in Latvia I have earned the love of the family also here in US. Feels like I have two families-one in Latvia and one here in US.

I want to tell you about my American family. Actually I could dedicate the whole blog post talking about them.

Nan – that is the name of my American mom and friend. Found her on Craigslist and for almost three weeks call her house my home. Somehow I want to be like her.
-She is honest with herself and is grounded in real life.
-She handles day to day living well, and makes it look easier than it really is sometimes.
-She can be covered in dirt from working in the garden or dressed for a party, and shines just the same either way.
-She is not a girl. But, she lets out the girl that lives in her heart often, to look with awe at the world around her.
-She sees potential and value in others beyond their ability to see it in themselves.
-She enjoys the life she is living.

And Jim – he is my American dad. He is intelligent, kind hearted gentleman who has collection of old American muscle cars! How cool is that? :) Promised to make me a real racing driver! Can`t wait I will get my California Driver License.

How could I not love them!? And I am thankful I met them. Nan told she already misses me thinking about I will have to go back home some day. But family like Social Security Number is forever :)

Moreover this is my third week at work. I am Business Relations Manager at Plug and Play Tech Center in Sunnyvale, Silicon Valley. My new job is amazing. Full of new opportunities and challenges. I have to admit I am absolutely out of my comfort zone. But that`s what I came for-to get some new expierence and skills. But my job deserves separate post. Gonna write about it next time.

So far I am doing just great. And that makes me a bit aware. Because I was told if something here seems to be too good to be true-most probably it is not true. And that`s why one day I asked to my new American friends why are they so good to me. And the answer was this it is not the question about them but me. That`s their natural answer to my positive interaction I came to them.

Nevertheless when I choose to be thankful, when I have a spirit of gratefulness—when I am fully aware of how much I have for which to be grateful—I am a different person. This will be so special Thanksgiving!

Thanks to BAFF for this opportunity!

Warm regards,

Sanita

P.S. By the way I got my first iPhone because friend of mine told I am illegal in Silicon Valley if I do not have a smartphone! Now I am legal :)

My first week in California

It is already a week since I am in U.S. First impressions are lasting ones. Well I am lucky because my first impression of USA and California is so fantastic. California welcomed me with beautiful bright, sunny weather and bountiful orange trees that made me smile.  I am staying in Mountain View  till I will find my own place in Sunnyvale.

It took 3 flights for me to get to California. My luggage and I arrived safely in San Francisco on Thursday evening  after leaving on Thursday morning. I expierenced no jet-lag at all! Seems that I was too tired after ~20 hour flight to feel the time difference.

My first days here were very active ones. Here are two more Latvians from BAFF with whom I went to the football game at Stanford having no clue what are the rules of the game. Next day I found myself with panda eyes from watching American football in sunglasses - good problem to have in October -:)

Next day three of us went to Edgewood National Park for hiking. A lot of lizards on our way.

Oh, and I have got a new American name. Americans call me Sunny because it is too hard for them to pronounce and remember my real name-Sanita. They say this name also characterises my personality. Well-I don`t mind they call me Sunny :) It is all about sun so far: sunny weather outside, gonna live in Sunnyvale and have a new name – Sunny.

Besides enjoying California by all my heart I am also getting ready to start my internship. But till that I have to find a place to live. Last days feeling like a desperate houswife without house refreshing websites of housing. But I am sure that the right place to call home will appear very soon.

Yeah, and one more thing about my new start here. I got an advise from American man before moving to USA. He told me: "whatever is going to happen to you in Silicon Valley just stay yourself at the end of the day". So I bought a book "Soul&Silicon" here about real stories, souls and spirits in the computer technology capital of the world: Silicon Valley, California - a place that offers little time for soul searching.

Ready for my professional and personal journey here in Silicon Valley, California!

Warm regards,

Sunny
